Introduction
I am going to be a little bit late to your lesson today and Ms Whittaker has very kindly agreed top start you off! You are making a 'Mini-Me' poster today which is an assessment and will assess your skills in :

1. setting up a page in Photoshop
2. importing an image from the Internet
3. cutting out (using lasso tools)
4. transforming and re-sizing images to scale
5. using layers

You should have the following with you on a memory stick:

b. A photo/photos of yourself that you will miniaturise

Activity: Celebrity Head Swap

As a warm-up activity, find two celebrity photographs in Google; paste them into a new page in Photoshop (19cm X 29cm: 300 pixels/inch) and using the lasso tools, cut out and swap their heads. Now cut out their bodies to remove any background. They are now ready to put onto a background which you can import. You have 20 Minutes to create a celebrity masterpiece!

Codes and conventions of action adventure movies

For the Controlled Test you will need to be very familiar with codes and conventions of Action Adventure films. As you watch ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” try to think about what those codes and conventions are.

you think appear in the film. Choose a minimum of THREE points, and in your exercise book, make a note of any examples/evidence from the film which proves that the convention is in evidence.

e.g. 4 – sword fight between Jack and Will

1 Strong male hero (with the occasional female hero)
2 Bombshell love interest
3 Guns, explosions
4 Fights: punch ups, martial arts, shoot outs
5 Heroic acts, stunts

GCSE Student Analysis of Jaws Opening Sequence

The opening of Jaws is linear and chronological, the events in order one after another in the order. The scene has a beginning, middle and end. The beginning and ending of the opening are both back to an equilibrium; everything is calm and peaceful.

Jaws features alot of stereotypical thriller conventions: this being the tension filled music, the female character being the victim, having the other character – who could possibly save her- being unaware that anything is wrong. The girl, thinking she is safe when she swims to the buoy but is infact going to be eaten!. enigma codes feature strongly is this scene, this is from the sharks perspective closeing in on the firl, automatically ask, 'what is watching the girl?', 'Is it dangerous?' Also never seeing what is attacking her is an example of partial vision this fear of the unknown a typical convention of a thriller.

In the opening to the film the majority of the scene is shot from the sharks perspective giving the audience the idea that she is not safe and also gives some indictation in which direction the danger is coming from, this creates even more tension as the attack seems inevitable. The editing of the sequence when the two teenagers are running to the sea and when the girl is being attacked is shown in quick fast paced, frantic cuts of shots from different angles. In contrast to the calm, static, lingering shots of the boy who has fallen asleep on the beach. The opening sequence is set at night time/early morning. the scene starts off with a bunch of young students having a beach party, as you can imagion this usually includes (Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll).

The beginning starts quietly, then the middle part where the tension becomes gradually louder and louder until the climactic ending becomes silent again. The silence at the end is a good representation of death. The screaming ans splashing about when the attack is happening is a great contrast to the boy lying peacefully on the sand near her. You kind of expect the boy to hear her struggle and the audience get a glimpse of hope that the boy will come and rescue the girl, but when that doesn't happen, the shark successfully kills the girl and the scene becomes silent once more.

Continuity editing is used throughout to help with the flowing of one scene to another. Match shots and shot reverse shot are used between the girl and the boy to show the sexual attraction between the two. Cross-cutting is used during the attack scene when it cuts back to the boy laying peacefully on the sand. This gives the audience a slight glimpse of hope that the boy might actually rescue the girl. Also, at the very end of the sequence two shots are dissolved into one. An early night shot is dissolved to a late shot to show the passing of time.Graphics:The title is in block capital for emphasis. They credits are on screen as the film is playing and are centered in the middle of the screen

'Spooks' - Year 10 Media TV Drama Analysis

Your essay question is:

Analyse the ways in which the following techniques are used in the extract from BBC Drama 'Spooks' to construct a representation of M15 agents and Terrorists:

Mise-en-scene

Sound

Cinematography

Mise-en-scene is everything you see in the frame (lighting, props, costumes, locations, set design)

Sound - Talk about DIEGETIC SOUND (Real sound and its effect) and NON DIEGETIC SOUND (Sound added in post-production - music, special effects and their effect on audience interpretations). How does sound add to, heighten our experience and help to construct the representations?

Cinematography - Why have certain shots been used and what does this framing communicate? Always ask WHY?

There are three distinct locations - The roof terrace; the office in M15; the "Don't shoot below 4ft" flat location.

Essay Structure:

1. Open with a definition of Representation and how TV has the power to 'Construct' representations of people, places and events through sound, mise-en-scene, cinematography and editing. Tell the reader that you are going to be exploring the representation of terrorists and M15 agents in the BBC TV Drama 'Spooks' in the episode entitled 'Talking Him Down' broadcast on 11/05/2007.

2. Using your skills of DENOTATION and CONNOTATION describe what you see and then ANALYSE the meanings communicated through the 3 key areas (Mise-en-scene, sound and cinematography). Here is an example of a paragraph DON'T COPY:

"The sequence opens on what seemingly appears to be a roof terrace on top of a block of flats overlooking London. The mise-en-scene is constructed to be intense and claustrophic - a small space tightly framed by fencing which creates a sense of being trapped. This anchors the state of mind of the terrorist who through dialogue says "...you have made us feel like animals".

3. When you have finished your analysis of the three key areas finish with a conclusion summing-up overall what 'REPRESENTATION' of M15 and terrorists this extract communicates and whether this CONFORMS TO OR CHALLENGES the STEREOTYPES you hold. YOU MIGHT ALSO WISH TO CONSIDER:

What techniques are used to involve audiences emotionally? How
does that position audiences?

What view of terrorism emerges from these scenes?

Good evening Year 10. I have been looking at a very fine selection of TV Drama blogs and would like to congratulate everyone who has emailed their links and done their homework. You guys go high-up on my 'Love-O-Meter'. I just wanted to let my class know that I won't be around during P5 tomorrow or Period 3 on Friday as I will be interviewing for the new Head of Media and Film. Also, one of the candidates will be teaching you during Period 4 on Thursday and Mr Fairnie will be observing, so I would be grateful if those of you that read this, could pass the message onto everyone in our class that they need to be on time! Thank you.

In period 5 with Mr Abiona, time will be given over to the personalising of blogs and creating those banners! You also need to finish your research into a TV drama which should provide information on the following:

The time has come to take your photographs for your second 'Section A' music promotion coursework project. We want you to produce professional single/album covers and associated media texts (magazine covers etc.) that are creative in their design and interesting in their representations. WE want you to think about:

1. FRAMING

4. Typography

5. Body language

and what all these connote/imply about the ideological values of your band /artist.

YOU MUST SHOW DETAILED EVIDENCE OF PLANNING FOR SUCCESS IN THE CREATION OF DETAILED THUMBNAIL SKETCHES IN YOUR SKETCH BOOK THAT SHOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR IDEAS.

Photo shoots will start this week in lessons. Make sure you bring your clothes, make-up and props so that you can take a really good set of photos. You will not be allowed to do your photos until your thumbnails are complete - a minimum of five should be done as requested by your teacher.

Year 11 GCSE Media Studies Exam Dates and Revision

Good evening everyone. I thought you might like to know that the GCSE Media Studies exam has now been set. You will receive your exam paper on Monday 27th April 2009 and have four school weeks to study the form and prepare your responses. Your exam will take place on Friday 22nd May 2009 in two sittings - morning and afternoon.

The clock is starting to tick and it is imperative that you begin to undertake wider reading about 'Quiz Shows' to help you develop your knowledge and understanding of the genre. To maximise your chances of success Team Media suggest YOU:

1. Look at the 'Doodle' regularly to keep up-to date with the revision resources that will be posted here.

2. Spend at least one hour each week working on preparing for the exam by working through the exam board AQA worksheet pack. Create a 'REVISION TIMETABLE' and dedicate time each week to building and cementing your knowledge and understanding of Quiz shows. Success lies in your preparation!

3. Revise the 'KEY CONCEPTS' of Media Studies and learn the language of quiz shows - I will post key words and their meanings on here. You need to practice using them so write them out, write their definitions; quiz each other; try to use the language in lessons when speaking about quiz shows and apply it when completing written tasks or worksheets.

These are some KEY WORDS that you should know and be able to use in your responses to questions in the exam. They will get you points and what do points mean? YES. PRIZES! I will add more to this list as we move through the topic. Put them on cards; make posters and paste them around your bedroom; mind-map them. Most importantly, start to use them in your responses in lessons and your practice essays.

Aerial Shot: shot filmed from aircraft or helicopter, extreme high angle.
Ambient Sound: natural background noise on television or film such as the sound of birds in a wood.
Ambient Light: natural, available light that is not enhanced in any way.
Audience: All those who receive or consume any media product.
Camera Angle: the position of the camera in relation to the main subject. High, low, canted, etc.
Cinematography: Camera Shots, Angles, Lighting
Connotation: Suggestive meaning of something, such as red connotates danger, blood.
Crane Shot: High angle shot filmed with a crane
Continuity editing: Referred to as invisible editing, so that the whole sequence looks natural.
Demographics: refers to social characteristics of and audience, described according to groupings such as social class, regional location, gender and age.
Denotation: literal meaning/ simple description of what an be seen or heard.
Diagetic sound: sound which the characters can hear.
Non-Diagetic sound: sound the actors cant hear, e.g.: music played other the scene.
Enigma: a question or puzzle being raised from a text.

Year 11 Media - Half Term Intervention Day

Thank you to all of you who came into school today to the Media Intervention Day. It was, in the main very successful and I thought I'd showcase a couple of examples of lovely work achieved. Above this messsage is Kelsey Ferguson's charity advertising campaign on 'Neglect' for the NSPCC. She completed the entire project - photos, posters in Photoshop and 1,000 word evaluation in four hours. Brilliant work Kelsey. Well Done!

Grant Tugwell also completed his Section B project - a film promotion Press Pack for a new film entitled Black October to be released by Warner Bros. This is his poster campaign and still photos that will feature in his press pack.

I would also like to congratulate Dan Cotter and Charlie Mogridge who came close to completing a Section A essay this morning; Georgia Covill and Stacey Craig who worked hard at refining their Section A and B projects, and Aaron Starn who worked well throughout the morning.

There is still work outstanding and we would strongly urge you to attend our Media clinics on a Tuesday between 3-4pm after half-term in order to finish off any work. It is in your interests to secure a high grade for the coursework worth 50% of the overall grade and we are here to help you realise your potential. Well Done to everyone who turned-up and worked today. Have a good half term and we look forward to seeing you next week when we return.

You are close to completing your PINK CD Cover analysis essays and the next stage in this project is to begin the process of constructing a new band or artist to launch into the current music market. Your task once you have created this hypothetical band/artist is to create an CD album cover to promote their first album release. This blog posting should help you with this process:

A CD cover needs to:

Attract a buyer - the primary target audience
Convey something about the genre of music inside
Give some information about the artist
Be an original design
Stand out from all the other CD covers in the rack
Or be outstandingly original and memorable – (difficult)

If a CD cover has one main function it is to stand out and sell the music by the startling design of the cover.

Art Work

The art work for the design MUST be documented in your sketch book as a series of thumbnail sketches, collage designs and mock-ups in Photoshop. There is no set number but the examiner will expect to see the development of your ideas. A final version should be inserted into a jewel case to show that your design works in its proper setting and at its correct size at the end of your production process.

Some general principles apply:

Work with colour as a design tool
Relate the cover design to the music; the artist/band and their attitude/image; type of record label and the target audience
Choose the font, size and style of lettering very carefully
Images need to be bold and not too busy, as reducing the size will make busy designs look claustrophobic
Look to create instant impact
Select very carefully the amount of information you put on the front cover – can some of it go elsewhere or should you create a gatefold cover design, or use the back cover.
Examiners will look for technical quality as well as originality. If you use a photo make sure it is a high quality image.
Print on high quality photo paper
Remember all work must be original with no found images or copyright material

One way to build a cover design is to work in layers in Photoshop. First build up each layer of the design from a base background.

Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas break. As you have already discovered, you starting a new Section A coursework project on the topic of 'Music Promotion'. The Doodle will be an online space where you can access all sorts of resources, links, essays, ideas to support you with this new project in order to maximise your marks and realise your creative ambitions in the marketing of a new band or artist. To suceed in this project you need to begin to look critically at how artists and bands are REPRESENTED in the media? Explore HOW and WHY these REPRESENTATIONS appeal to their TARGET AUDIENCE? And, finally HOW MEDIA INSTITUTIONS (RECORD LABELS, MAGAZINES, PRINT MEDIA, TV ADVERTS, RADIO) CONSTRUCT AN IDENTITY AND IMAGE FOR THE BAND/ARTIST?

When analysing any CD cover, consider the following points:

Genre: as well as considering the genre of music that the CD belongs to, you must also consider the generic conventions of the CD cover itself: what goes on a typical CD cover? Consider how the front and the back are different and contain different sorts of information: why is this? Remember, on a shelf in a shop, people are attracted to the cover first, then turn it over to read the back. On the front cover, CD covers will typically have the artist or name of the band, the name of the album, an image and stickers (such as parental advisory, or announcing a particular well-known track). What purpose does all this serve? If some CDs deviate (veer away) from the convention, why is this?

Lettering / font styles and sizes: how does the lettering fit with the genre of music or design? For instance, Marilyn Manson’s greatest hits CD uses gothic font to complement his style. Some punk bands have very basic handwritten type styles to fit with their ‘basic’ or anarchic image.

Image: what picture is on the cover? Is it a design or artwork? Is it a photograph of the artist? Look at the mise-en-scene (how the scene is set). This includes colours, props, lighting, make-up and clothing, how the star or subject is posed (eye contact, facial expressions etc). Consider the messages given out by choices of colour and connotations (associations) gained. How will the audience react to the CD? Do different people receive different meanings? If so, how and why?

Stars / icons: is this image of the artist one you’d expect to see? For instance, a star like Beyonce always has an image constructed on glamour and sex appeal whilst a punk band like Green Day tend to focus more on social issues to sell CDs. Do bands or artists have particular props, costumes, dress, fashions that are instantly recognisable? For instance, Eminem’s hair colour, Marilyn Manson’s contact lens and metal teeth or Slash’s top hat? Some stars constantly challenge their audience’s expectations, like Madonna. Her CD covers reflect the new image or re-branding that she is going for.

Representation: look at how bands or artists and the genre are represented and how the audience will react to that. For instance, hip-hop stars have been criticised for portraying guns, cars and ‘gangsta’ images. Critics say this presents a negative image for young people to follow and also sets up stereotypes of black culture. This type of music has been criticised in portraying women as sexual stereotypes. If your CD either challenges or reinforces stereotypes this may be something to comment on too.

Audience: who exactly will buy this CD? Try to be specific. Why will someone buy a CD? Is it because they want escapism and pleasure, or to gain a sense of their own identity or feeling of belonging? Or are they buying it because they have been influenced by someone else?

Year 11 Mock Exam - Quiz Show Set Design (2)

The final task of the mock exam is to design a 'set' for your Quiz Show concept. Here are some conceptual design ideas to support you with the development of your Quiz Show set. It will be important for you to consider the connotations of your design and how the different elements (lighting, colour, props, podiums, screens, furniture, entrances and exits etc.) combine to create meaning, mood, tone and a mode of address for viewers at home. Your designs will need to consider:

1. Placement of studio cameras (usually 3 + a crane)
2. Placement of the internal audience
3. Where the contestants will stand/sit
4. Where the host/hosts will stand/sit

At Unit G, we are launching a new TV channel based on our wealth of past programming. We have realised that one element missing is a quiz show, so we hope you can help! We are keen to develop a new quiz show which targets young people between 14 and 20. The new quiz show should reflect our core values of respecting all members of society and providing good quality programming. To help us in our development of this new quiz show, please complete the tasks below. This is your chance to develop the central programme in our new channel’s line up!

Task 1 (40 Mark)
Choose an existing quiz show and outline:

How it uses the codes and conventions of the quiz show genre.
The rules / structure of the quiz;
What is effective about the audio/visual presentation including camera, sound and mise-en-scene
